The colony was centered at the house of Miss Florence Griswold, patron saint of the artists. Will Howe Foote, one of the distinguished painters associated with the colony described Miss Florence as, "a remarkable character, both happy-go-lucky and artistic.... Everyone felt at home in her house.... Ice box raids after a long outing were a part of the picture."*
